Press Report

We have never been disappointed by the performances of the students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. In their tenth appearance at these concerts they managed to raise the bar even higher! The performers ranged from 13 to 19 years. David Jones provided piano accompaniment throughout.

Nathan Kenworthy (clarinet), the youngest student, opened the concert with Three Fantasy Pieces by Schumann, played with great skill and warmth. In the second half he delivered a sensitive performance of Spohr’s first clarinet concerto.

This year we had three singers, Laura McDonagh, Sonny Fielding and Megan Baker. They each sang solos and then combined to form a duet and a trio. Mozart arias were predominant, although Megan sang songs by Tchaikovsky and Herbert Howells with great clarity and Sonny, the first male singer we have heard, introduced us to “Sebben Crudele” by Caldara. Laura demonstrated a tremendous ability to adapt her singing between solos and ensemble.

Sophie Rogan (violin), a member of the National Youth Orchestra, performed music by Bach and Dvorak with great maturity and feeling.

Both halves were concluded by Jack Sindall, the principal horn of the Halle Youth Orchestra. He played with commendable sensitivity or bravura pieces by Schumann, Vinter and Abbott.
