PRESS REPORT

Once again students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music provided an enthusiastic audience with a series of fine performances in an exceptional evening of music making at our concert in March.

Alex Flanders (trumpet) opened the concert with pieces by Flor Peeters and Busser, not house-hold names, but the music was quite melodic and approachable. He returned later to give an effective rendition of “Misty” (Errol Garner) and finished with “Badinage” by Bozza.

Grace O’Malley produced a rich mezzo-soprano tone with which she sang an aria by Bellini, “Blow the Wind Southerly” and the Bach / Gounod “Ave Maria”.  She ended the concert with “We’ll Gather Lilacs in the Spring Again” (Novello).

Lucy Pond played a splendid flute solo by Ferroud and “Balade pour Flute et Piano” (Philippe Gaubert). The fourth student was Kate de Campos (viola). She played “Morpheus”, a remarkably evocative piece by Rebecca Clarke, part of Schumann’s “Marchenbilder” and a test piece by Faure.

David Jones provided suitably apt piano accompaniment where appropriate.
